Light artist/philosopher and artist Otto Piene has died at the age of 86. The co-founder of the avant-garde movement Zero was known for his light art works. To him light symbolised a contrast to the darkness that held sway in the Second World War. Piene painted with light, creating spaces and forms made of light, and even a “Light Ballet”. Besides experimenting with light, Piene was also fascinated by movement, wind, fire and energy.

Piene lived and worked in Düsseldorf and in Massachusetts, USA.
