Entertaining experiment with optical flow

Photos: Ranagram

Visitors to the Live Entertainment und Event Expo 2014 fair in Tokyo were able to view the latest technologies, products, and a wide range of services related to the events and entertainment industry. Together with Color Kinetics, the Japanese design studio Ranagram developed an interactive LED wall especially for the show.

The installation featured approximately 1,000 LEDs installed behind a large scale iron grid. A sensor tracked the outlines of people walking by and responded with vibrant visualizations through an optical flow algorithm. Colour and luminous intensity were controllable via iPad. If there were no movements in front of the wall geometric patterns appeared and changed shape based on sound data converted into animations through computer-generated visual effects. For visitors to the Expo the facade was an entertaining experiment and an overall exciting experience.
